Political warrior, champion of Telangana cause >
KCR started off his life with a consultancy firm in Hyderabad immediately finishing his M.A. in Telugu literature and started sending people to foreign shores for jobs with a sobriquet `Dubai Sekhar'. Later, he joined Youth Congress and became admirer of Sanjay Gandhi, son of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He started eyeing on state politics very closely and tried ticket from Congress during 1983 elections. When the high command of the party rejected his plea, he fought independently and lost to his `political guru' and former minister A. Madan Mohan from Siddipet Assembly constituency. His strong desire to become a legislator was fulfilled in the year 1985, when he joined TDP and elected from his native district by defeating Congress strong man T. Mahender Reddy. He never turned back till 2004 and elected to Assembly for six times (except in 2004 by election). He served as Minister during 1987-88 in NT Ramarao Cabinet and again in 1996 as Transport minister in N. Chandrababu Naidu's government and he was made as Deputy Speaker of AP Assembly 2000-01. In the April, 2001 he resigned as Deputy Speaker and in the same month he announced formation of new party Telangana Rastra Samiti (TRS) witch a single point agenda of forming separate state and upholding pride of Telangana.
But his ideology was dismissed by political opponents and claimed that he was only hankering after power and struggle for separate Telangana state would get nowhere. But the determined KCR never gave up and fought 2004 elections which were testimony for TRS. He contested from both Siddipet Assembly and Karimnagar Lok Sabha constituencies and won both to silence all. Then he had alliance with Congress party and entered the national consciousness as a slightly beleaguered-looking
Cabinet minister without portfolio in the first UPA government of 2004. Then he got Labour and Employment ministry in which he had uncomfortable stay for two years. Later, he served ties with Congress and resigned as Union Minister. Then he did another "mistake" during 2009 election by going along with TDP, which resulted in bad terms with AP CM Chandrababu. Congress under the leadership of YS Rajasekhar Reddy wiped out both TDP and TRS in 2009 elections, but Mr. Reddy died in helicopter crash in September, 2009. Immediately after two months, KCR announced hunger strike to achieve one and only goal of separate Telangana. Lakhs of people came on roads in support of Telangana and hundreds became martyrs in the movement that was witnessed violence all over the state
On the 11th day of KCR's hunger strike, then union minister P. Chidambaram made a statement on initiating the process of separate Telangana.
He build up continuous pressure on UPA government and at the same time he persuaded all his legislators to quit Assembly seats and seek fresh mandate. He made a proposal to Congress high command to merge his party, if it immediately announces separate Telangana. But, Congress fail to heed his request and bite the dust. Finally, on 30 July, 2013 new Telangana state was born and he became Chief Minister on 2 June, 2014.
He set an example in nurturing the new state with the support of his son K.T. Rama Rao (KTR), daughter Kavitha and nephew T. Harish Rao. As a Chief Minister, he is transforming the state into "Bangaru Telangana" (golden Telangana) and most of the welfare scheme that he is introducing reaching out downtrodden, women and other sections of the people.
As union minister, deputy speaker of united Andhra Pradesh Assembly, KCR meted out insult by then Congress leadership and also his friend who turned as foe- Chandrababu Naidu. He also distanced himself from his close friend Kodandaram with whom he formed "Telangana Joint Action Committee", which had a remarkable role in achieving separate state.
Mr. Rao strongly believes in astrology, numerology and Vastu and conducts `Homams', visits shrines very often. he gone for early elections and dissolved Assembly in September 2018.
