Telangana Rashtra Samiti, the party representing the goals and aspirations of people of Telangana was founded by K. Chandrasekhar on 27 April, 2001. It is headquartered in Hyderabad. It was created with the sole aim of carving out a separate state of Telangana with Hyderabad as its capital.

Separate Telangana was the long time dream of the people of this state. To realize this dream KCR held deliberations with various organizations and he quit TDP and launched a new party Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS). But going was never easy and KCR, at times had to overcome insurmountable odds. Within 60 days of its launch, the party tasted its first victory by winning one-third of Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTC) and one-quarter of Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTC) in Siddipet.

The first significant event in the history TRS came in 2004. During elections held in that year, TRS entered into an alliance with Congress on receiving assurance that Congress would start the process of separate state formation once it comes to power. Even after two years of coming to power when central government failed to deliver on its promise, KCR withdrew support to the government in September, 2006. In the same month i.e., on 13 of September all the party leaders including KCR resigned from their posts and went for by polls. People of Telangana stood by KCR and elected him and other party members with a huge majority. This extraordinary victory was seen as wishes as apirations of people of Telangana for separate statehood.

Despite strong demand for state creation from the people, as is reflected in voting pattern, the political atmosphere of that time led to delay in the commmencement of the process. Protesting against this, TRS continued its struggle and all the members of the party resigned to their posts. In 2009 elections, TRS allied with TDP after TDP agreed to extend its unconditional support to separate Telangana. However, the grand alliance did not yield the desired results as Telangana vote got split between TRS, Congress, PRP and BJP. In the end, TRS could win only 10 MLA seats and 2 MP seats. KCR's decision to go on indefinete fast is an inflection point in Telangana struggle which set the trajectory in the direction of Separate Telangana State. On Novermber 29, 2009 KCR announced indefinite hunger strike but police interrputed the fasting and sent him to Khammam Jail where he continued hunger strike. The news spread like wildfire and entire Telangana was up in arms. Protests erupted in every corner of the Telangana, people from every walk of life and students especially rallied behind KCR. Within next 10 days whole of Telangana came to a standstill and with KCR's health fast deterioting, the Center was forced to announce the initiation of the process of creation separate state. When there was delay in comencement of the process of Telangana, KCR brought all political forces together under a umbrella body called Telangana JAC, with Prof. Kodandaram as its chairman, to pursuade Centre to expediate the process. When the agitation for separate Telangana reached its peak during 2009, a student of Osmania University Kasoju Srikanthachary made self-immolation bid and died, declaring his sacrifice was for separate Telangana. After 4 years of intense agitations by TJAC, government embarked on carving out Telangana State in 2013 and concluded the process with the passing of AP Reorganization Act in the Parliament. Thus Telangana Came into being as 29th state of India on 2 june 2014.

In the subsequent Assembly held during that year, TRS emerged as the single largest party in Telangana. KCR became the first Chief minister of Telangana state with the sole aim of realizing the only dream of people of this state, 'Bangaru Telangana'. His son K.T. Ramarao, nephew T. Harishrao were inducted in cabinet, whereas KCR's daughter K. Kavitha elected as MP from Nizamabad. In the last four years TRS government lauched various initiatives for the upliftment of the poor and downtrodden. It has dissolved the Assembly prematurely and going for the polls. It is confident that people of the region would recognize thier efforts and vote the party to power in the coming elections.
