Political Background >
Rao is basically an agriculturist. He joined Telugu Desam Party on the request of the then party chief NT Rama Rao. He then rose to fame among the TDP leaders and served the party for over three decades. He holds a record of rendering his services as a minister for a long time. He contested in 1983 elections for the first time from Sattupalli constituency but failed to get a maximum number of votes. And the 1985 by-elections paved way for him to emerge as the leader after winning the assembly seat of Sattupalli. He was then offered to serve as Irrigation minister. He then served as Excise, Irrigation and Road and building minister consecutively for two terms after bagging Sattupalli assembly seat in 1994 and 1999 elections.
 
In 2004 elections Rao lost the assembly seat and continued to serve as TDP district president of Khammam. He again won the seat in 2009 elections but again lost in 2014. It was during state bifurcation, Rao floated to TRS party and became a member of legislative council in the elections held while forming a new government. A few months later, he was given roads and development portfolio and continued to serve as minister until 2016 by-elections. He emerged victorious in 2016 by-elections by a majority of 48,000 votes. He is currently representing as minister for Women and Child Development and Road and Buildings. 
 
Development Activities:
Drought-hit region Palair has now turned into a watershed after the construction of Bhakta Ramadasu Dam. Rao has brought Rs 350 crores to the constituency for constructing the project. He was also responsible for the construction of BT roads connecting villages and tandas. He is also striving to provide drinking water facilities to the people under the Mission Bhagiratha scheme. He also chalked out a plan to develop lord Rama temple in Bhadrchalam with Rs 300 crores. Construction works like school buildings, water projects, power projects, Anganwadi buildings are in progress.

His effective speaking skills in tribal language surprised the people of the community. It is learnt that Rao is very efficient in bringing the funds to the constituency to develop it. He is also known for successfully supervising the Godavari pushkaralu in Bhadrachalam which arrives once in 12 years. He had also organised lord Rama's 60th anniversary of coronation while serving as a minister in 2011. He has good memory power. He remembers the names of each and every party leader across the districts whom he met till date. Rao is also known for his down to earth nature. Being a minister, he never forgets his etiquette and mingles with the people easily.
