Jalagam Venkat Rao, the son of Ex-CM Jalagam Venkat Rao, initially started his career as a software engineer in an American-based company. After the demise of his father and his brother Prasad Rao's suspension from Congress, Venkat Rao enterted into politics by joining Congress party in 2004 to carry the legacy of his family. He created history by defeating the then TDP minister Tummala Nagreswara Rao on Congress ticket and in 2009, contested from Khammam constituency, he lost to Tummala Nageswara Rao. The frequent changes in political equations made Venkat Rao to cross over to YSRCP. Later, he joined TRS party during the formation of Telangana state and got ticket as well as won in 2014 elections from Kothagudem.

His family reputation and education qualification made Jalagam Venkat Rao easily win over the TDP leader Tummala Nageswara Rao in the 2009 elections. No cases were filed against him during the elections. And the strange thing is, the affidavit he submitted then to the election officers is real.
